Freshman Reflection

In my middle school years they were hype, fast, and happy. Now towards the end of my freshman everything has changed. I learned to control myself. In 8th grade I used to get angry about every little thing and that's what made me not have friends and I wasn't humble or nice or anything. Now I've changed and I am better because I can control myself, ignore problems, and I am more humble and nicer to people other than my family. This changed occurred because of my ex-boyfriend, Seth A. Brown. He showed me that I didn't need anyone ,but myself. For example, I used to always want to argue with people I always didn't like. Now I just don't hang with people I don't know or like. Seth showed me how to appreciate myself in every way no matter how people tried to bring me down. My experience was hard and difficult, but it was really good because it help me get into a good high school and learn who my real friends are.  Before I  came to Parkway West i though all the teachers were so preppy and uptight and didn't care about their students, but it changed in just one year of experience. I have on friend that had a bad and good affect on me. That one friend was Obadiah N. Fuller. she was there for me from the beginning to end. Now she is the only person I can depend on so far as myself. Therefore I don't spend a lot of time with certain people that used to be my best friends because we all moved to a new period in our lives. My relationship my little brother, dad, and my uncle has changed by me being able to speak my mind freely around them and tell how I feel about certain things in my life. I often do all my work to get the best grade between a A or a B. That's how I have changed over this one freshman year.

Birds Die by Glass

In the Philadelphia Newspaper there's an article called "Birds Blinded by the Light of Philly's Glass-Clad Buildings" by Sandy Bauers. Keith Russel explores how birds die by Philadelphia transparent glass. Also they explain that glass that reflects the sky can be deadly to birds. In the article it points out that "at quitting time at 8, they might have picked up a dozen birds or more." This means that during the 24 hour day birds are being killed all the time by striking buildings. This stood out in the article because it tells me how many birds are die everyday by glass. Also a biology professor, Daniels Klem Jr., says that a billion birds die every year in a result of striking glass on buildings of Philadelphia. In my opinion I think this is bad and Philadelphia should create buildings out of wood more than glass because glass can easily break and would can't. In return glass can't burn, wood can. I still think they should build buildings out of wood so we can have more birds populated in Philadelphia. This reminds me of a empower assignment of bees dying because of a Apocephalus Borealis fly that spreads a virus and billions of bees die every year just like the birds.

Opal Ruth Prater "Love is Stronger Than Death"

In the article "Love is Stronger Than Death" on the website This I Believe.org by Opal Ruth Prater explains how she gets through her husbands death with a shirt. She also explains how she still loves and misses him dearly. For example, Opal brings up that her husband left a shirt that he wore on a chair in the backyard from doing a lot of yard work and taking care of the kids. This shirt had sunshine outdoorsy scent. After smelling the shirt she started to cry because she missed him too much. She has watched her kid grow up in grown adults and have kids of their own and Opal looks into the sky and congratulates her husband on how wonderful they raised the kids as she continues to hold the shirt in her hands. In my opinion I believe this is true. I believe this is true because the person you care about could die or something bad could happen to them and you could really care for that person. Also somewhere in the world every child or adult loses the person they care about and only has a object or picture or something to remember them by. This reminds me of my uncle Mike. This reminds me of my uncle Mike because he died in 2008 and until this day all I have to remember him by is a picture of him and my grandmother. Also the only quote I remember him saying is as long as I put my mind to something i really care about I can accomplish anything. So this belief is true in the world to me.

Broadcasting....Whiteness

There's a article in the New York Times called "Broading a World of Whiteness" by Jon Caramanica. The article is about shows on television having mostly white people on those shows and not enough blacks, hispanics, and asians on them. Mostly all of the shows have white people and not enough of the others colors and the only specific channels that show a lot of black are BET or Centric. A certain detail that stood out in the article was "Television is nowhere near diverse enough." This detail stood out because it's a fact and that black people, asian people, and hispanic people need to be on more white shows just like white people need to be on black shows. Either way the bottom line is that directors need to include different colored people other than white. Honestly to me there not as many blacks on the network television like ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX because maybe white people can act better and they don't give as much emotion as black people do.

Gun Fashion

In a article called "New Fashion Wrinkle: Stylishly Hiding the Gun" by New York Times reporter, Matt Richtel talks about the new fashion that allows people to carry guns in their clothes without no one knowing of finding out. Also a older company, Woolrich started this fashion now other clothing companies are starting to semi-copy this fashion in new ways. A chino, which cost $65,are a fashion material that holds guns. Th new gun fashion is good because a lot of people like them and people comment on how the clothes changed their fashion and appearance. For example, Shawn Thompson said that "I'm not James Bond or nothing, but these pretty nice." This quote shows that Thompson likes the new gun fashion. To begin with i though this article was going to be about a new clothing line that just came out for teenagers and hiding guns in your clothes like a regular would do for protection and really lame and corny. To my surprise it was corny or lame it was actually about fashion that u can were to hide your guns or any other weapon as long as you have a liscense. I think that a lot people would reduce the limit of number crimes all over the world i think it's a good idea to protect your self with this new fashion. I think it will the crime rates because that person with the gun fashion will actually have a chance to protect their sleves from danger or any crime around them.

Afghan Girls get injured by Acid; Scared to go to School

In the article "Afghan Girls, Scarred by Acid, Defy Terror, Embracing School" Shamisa Husseini and other girl and older women suffer and experience the burning of acid sprayed in their face. Also this explains that afghan girls and women are sprayed with burning acid by Taliban terrorists, To keep them from going to school. Shamisa Husseini said in the article that she still has to go to school even if she's killed. The quote that stands out the most in this article is that other than Shamisa, 14 other girls were injured (burned) by the acid as well. Although 1,300 other female students have returned to the community fixed,but still remain in there homes.This goes to show that obvisouly this is a major issue to the Afghan parents. Before I started reading this article I though it was going to be about a couple of teenage girls getting burned by toxic waste. Now after reading the article I realize that this article is somewhat I imagined it to be about. This article also reminded me a little bit about a movie on military soldiers getting burned by toxic waste and though it would kill them because they started getting sick really bad. Honestly if this was going on in America I wouldn't to come to school either because of the fear of being burned by acid by a stranger I don't know. How could that Taliban people do this to little girls that honestly didn't do anything to them? Who knows the real true honest explaination for this cause, but it's good that no more girls are getting injured (burned) by acid.

Firefighters risk their lives to save a warehouse

In the Philadelphia Newspaper there's an article called "2 Firefighters Killed, 2 Hurt in 5-alarm Fire." This article is written by the Philadelphia Staff Report. Also this article is mainly about how 4 firefighters risked theirs lives to save a furniture store form embers that started in a warehouse. Therefore 2 firefighters died after being trapped in the collapsed furniture store from the warehouse at East York and Jasper Street. The others two firefighters were quickly rushed to the Temple University Hospital. For example in the article it says "the fire was reported at 3 a. m. and declared under control at 6 a. m." I honestly think that the families of the two firefighters that died are very hurt to have them risk their lives and offer themselves to save a building from burning. Also I think that the other firefighters are very hurt just as much as the family members and their co-workers are. I feel as though they died in honor and not in vain because they didn't just save the people, but saved the on going fire the could've killed more than just themselves. So that's why i feel as though they should have a proper memorial and died in honor not vain.

Priests Trial Delay

 In the Philly Newspaper there's an article called "Delay sought in priests' trial" by John B. Martin. This is currently about  Msgr William J Lynn and  Rev James J Brennan sexually assaulted little boys since 1996. Parents say that he should go to jail and what makes do such irresponsible things. I feel as though both men  should go to jail. I feel as though his trials should not be on delay because they could still be sexually assaulting little boys. I suggest that nobodies children should be sexually assaulted. To me I think he should be sentenced to life in prison because no matter what they says they still commited a crime that was not suppose to happen in the first place.life in prison will teach him the lesson of leaving people alone  especially little boys. they needs to brought to justice because if he's not he will still continue to proceed with his actions. Both men had a trail Monday and was excused from the court.looks like they never were put to jail all the way.

Asian Couple Gets Robbed

There is an article in the Philly news called "Video shows gang attacking Asian couple." The article briefly explains how a Asian couple gets robbed in their driveway and in their home by 7 African Americans. Also this talks about how as the robbery was going on it was all caught on tape and that the house has robbed before while they weren't home. An quote in the article by the Korean-American husband is "they took the $ 3,000 he had in his pocket and took the $ 4,000 the from the man's wife." I feel as though robberies are completely wrong. In addition I feel as though that the robbers robbed the Korean-American couple for the money and basically knew who they were before they robbed them. Posters should be put up to find out who these people are. Also people should make sure they lock their windows, doors, and garage doors so they don't get robbed and they know that they are not going to get robbed. My family has been robbed more then once and we made sure that every thing was locked. A lot of my dads stuff was stolen. We have yet to figure out why, who, and how did we get robbed if we know that everything was in check. Also a lot of other families in the world get robbed for no apparent reason therefore people shouldn't do the wrong thing they should do the right thing in life because if they don't their going to end up in jail for their entire life or maybe shorter.

I'm a Criminal and You are too

There's an  short article in the CNN News called "I'm a criminal and so are you." This article talks about how Michelle Alexander identifies herself as a criminal and is saying that everyone is an criminal too. Also she is also saying that everyone every now and then commits a crime or breaks the law. A quote from the article states "No matter what their color, age or gander, most of the people in my neighborhood  and in my workplace seem to think criminals exist somewhere else -- in ghettos, mainly." This quote mainly says that around Alexander's work area and neighborhood people are saying people that are ghetto cause the most criminals more than they do. I think that everyone creates crimes equally no matter what the race or who you are. If you break the law then you break the law there's nothing you or no one can do about it. When i first started reading this article I though about the criminals in jail instead of me being a criminal. Now that I think about Alexander is right everyone is a criminal and no one can stop it or do anything. Whats done is done, you can't change it.

Pergancy outside of Marriage

An article in the New York times called "For Women Under 30, Most Births Occur Outside Marriage" talks about unmarried women having children. Also younger women that have children are illegitimacy. Furthermore Lisa Mercado is an unmarried women with a 6 year-old daughter that hardly spends with her child because of working two jobs.The father barely even lends a hand cause of dealing with other children of his own. The reasons that the article gives for as to why people are marrying less before having children are diverse of globalization and birth control pills. I do, but then I don't agree with these reasons because globalization is always the problem and birth control doesn't always 100% works for every women. I honestly think that people are having children because they want to be with someone, but the boyfriend or SOUL MATE doesn't want to commit to the relationship or take care of the baby. My parents aren't married because my mom and dad never decided to get married. I honestly think that my dad and mom being married won't make a difference whether they're married or not because the way I was raised will always be the same no matter what happens.I don't expect to get married in the future meaning as though I want to really focus on school then worry about kids.I don't expect to raise a family of my own, but to have a boyfriend that's really going to commit the relationship before kids.

Temperature Rises and Lowers

There's a article in the Philly Newspaper called "Big warm up begins, but how high will temperatures go?" saying that there will be higher temps in a couple of days. Also it talks about how the temperature rises then goes down to 48 degrees Thursday night with rain. In the article it says "then showers move in Thursday overnight into Friday."This quote means that when Thursday comes it will rain and it will continue to rain until Friday. I honestly think that the temperature is crazy because meaning as though the temperature will rise on Thursday it would still be cold on Saturday and Sunday.So therefore there's is no point of having to get hype about Thursday's temperature then all of sudden it gets really cold. I suggest that more people in Philadelphia should watch the news so they would know what the weather is and pay attention to the temperature for the days to come.

Facebook is Using You!

There's an article by Lori Andrews called "Facebook is Using You."This article is mainly about how Facebook makes their money and how facebook uses thier accountants personal information for advertisements. For example in the article it says that "facebook makes their money by selling ad spaces to companies that want to reach us."meaning that the creators of facebook uses personal info to use for an ad. Also another example from the article is "Facebook runs the ads." Meaning that facebook makes the ads pop up for that person on their facebook account. My idea about this article is that I fel as though facebook should ask for that persons permission to use their personal info for ads and they say "no" then facebook should leave that person(s) alone. Never had I though that facebook uses personal info for ads. I think it's illegally and wrong in all different ways. Therefore I also think people should block the ads and completely ignore them.

Pictures Photoshopped or Not

Recently there has been a lot of talk about the article in the New York Times on  celebrities and/or models that look super-skinny in pictures that they take which are put in magazines and advertisements. This article is called " Photoshopped or Not? A Tool to Tell."Dr. Farid and Dr. Eric Kee are students in computer science at Darthmouth.They are working on a way to figure out if pictures famous people take are edited or not. I think that this topic is important because when some celebrities see their pictures they feel offended in a way because people are changing the way they look in pictures that they take. Also i think this because I believe everyone shouldn't be changed in pictures. I believe they should stay the same when they take pictures. I also think that super-skinny people should gain more weight to be the weight they should so they can't be unhealthy.

iPad In China

The article "In China, Human Costs Are Into an iPad" talks about how workers in china are overworked, work in unsafe conditions, and die of constant explosions in Apple factories. Also how a certain factory worker named "Lai Xiaodong" is worked long hours to keep a good job. For example in the article it quotes "Employees work excessive overtime, in some cases seven days a week, and live in crowded dorms." This piece of evidence shows that employees never get enough sleep and wind up going to the hospital because of they jobs they have. I honestly think that these workers need to get a new job and if they don't, Apple need to do something about these problems because it can cause more than 72 people could possibly get injured or die. Many of the people in Apple say that "If Apple is warned, and didn't act, that's reprehensible."says Nicholas Ashford, a former chairman of the National Advisory Committee
on Occupational Safety." Therefore it needs to get taken care of because if it doesn't the people in the world will die faster than they are living.

Cracking Teenagers Codes

The main idea for the article "Cracking Teenagers Codes" is that a 34 year old named Danah Boyd is cracking teenagers codes online of the internet. Also this article explains why teenagers feel like they need to code everything they put on the internet because of their parents over protectiveness and they need to share a depressing time or moment. In the article it says"A teenage girls who has been sexually molested by her uncle and has nobody to talk to in her hometown might benefit greatly from communicating with a counselor online." I feel that topic on cracking teenagers codes could be very helpful. It could be very helpful because a lot of teenagers in different communities could have a boy/girl problem, get sexually harassed or molested by a family member or some one else, and get bullied by various people and not have no one to talk to about what the teenager has been through. I also feel that parents should let through children roam around the neighborhood to get to know everyone and feel comfortable about talking to people they like or trust.To me I wonder if this will really happen so the generation of teenagers and kids would live on.

Teaching Kids How to Break Up Nicely

In this article "Teaching Kids How to Break Up Nicely" by Benoit Denizet-Lewis teenagers on Face book are learning how to break up nicely. This points out that kids( teenagers)don't know to break up the right way and most of the break ups are on Face book. This article includes quotes stating "16 year-old Lazangie knows a thing or two about Face book-related break ups." Teenagers are shown more than  likely to break up than  make up over stupid things. I think that breaking up should be done nicely, but not on a Face book status for every one to see the status and comment on that status. I think this because if a break up between two people is on a status it should done in a message sent directly to the person your breaking up with not for everyone to see.Also it could lead to more trouble. Before I started I though this article was about breaking up in Parkway by a different student giving her/his personal though on breaking up nicely.

Last dose of Aspirin Prevents heart attack or Strokes

There is a article on Phillynews.com about a low dose of aspirin that could prevent the first heart attack of the first stroke. It also say "anyone currently taking low doses of aspirin to reduce risk of first heart attack or stroke should talk to their doctor before they stop." I honestly think that if aspirin can reduce the risk of having a stroke or heart attack then it would be a good idea. Therefore I think that you should talk to your doctor before taking the aspirin. If you don't talk to your doctor about the aspirin you take then it will mostly cause your body to cause a reaction to your synisis or set off a certain nerve in your body and that will send you to the hospital on a 50-50 percent chance. Also if you know what aspirin your taking then you already know what your doing.

Biggest event of 2011

This year has ended with numerous events that happened. Also to sum up some of those events were Osama Bin Laden killed, Hurricane Irene, The Occupy Wall Street protests, Casey Anthony, Death of Apple Founder Steve, Japnese earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown. Some of the biggest worldwide events, but the event that interest me the most is Hurricane Irene. It interest me the most because it made a lot of damage to a lot of neighborhoods and towns or cities. I hope that those events will be remembered as we enter the new year of 2012.
